Thrashers continue quest for division title against Caps
Hockey Betting Lines
04/04/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Atlanta Thrashers will try to move closer to winning their first-ever division title when they welcome the lowly Washington Capitals to Philips Arena tonight.
The Thrashers have already clinched the club's first postseason berth, but are still fighting off Tampa Bay for the Southeast Division crown. Atlanta has 93 points and three games left to play, while the Lightning have 92 points and just two games left.
Atlanta is coming off back-to-back wins and the latest victory came Saturday in Boston. Keith Tkachuk's goal with just 18.6 seconds left in the final frame lifted the Thrashers to the 3-2 victory over the Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden.
Ilya Kovalchuk and Greg de Vries also scored for the Thrashers, while Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves in the victory.
The Thrashers are 22-11-6 as the host club this year and still have one game left at home after tonight. Atlanta will visit Carolina on Friday evening before closing out the regular season Saturday evening against visiting Tampa Bay.
The Capitals, meanwhile, ended a six-game skid Tuesday night against the Florida Panthers. Olaf Kolzig stopped 27 shots for his first shutout of the season to help Washington earn the 1-0 home win at Verizon Center.
Alexander Ovechkin scored the game's only goal for the Capitals, who won for just the third time in 18 games (3-11-4). Washington is second from the bottom in the East with just 68 points.
Tonight marks the final road test of the year for Washington, which is 10-23-7 as the visiting team this year. The Caps will close out the regular season with Saturday's home tilt against Buffalo.
Atlanta has won five of the seven meetings this season against Washington, and both setbacks in the series came in overtime. The Thrashers are 12-5-1 (one tie) over their last 18 matchups with the Capitals, and have won seven of nine as the home club in the series.
